What on earth are you thinking?

corndogcaravan

It all started here! Lontzen, Belgium.

We were staying in this cute attic apartment. It was small, but had everything we needed. We were staying in a village that was small, quaint, quiet and slow. It was so refreshing.

The conversation first began as a "let's downsize our life so we can travel more" conversation. Which at that time looked like maybe moving to a villa or condo to allow more free time. Well, at the time that didn't make financial sense. So we just decided to update our pop-up camper and start using it more.

While Ray was updating our camper he was using YouTube to look up how to do certain things regarding the "camper flip." With those searches came suggestions for full time RVers! People were living on the road fulltime, seeing the country, and some were even still working!

COULD WE POSSIBLY DO THAT?!

Ray finished the flip and we sold the camper to some friends. We decided to get a new RV and travel fulltime. As we continued to research this new lifestyle option, we found people who lived in vans. This was super intriguing to us. We found a channel called "We're the Russo's" who were in the process of downsizing from a Class A RV to a Class B (a van). All their points for downsizing made so much sense. We knew immediately that a Class B was the way we were going to go! We then started to find other "vanlife people" who began to truly inspire us! We knew we could do this!

It was more than a year of conversations and research before we told ANYONE. I didn't even tell my closest friends or family. What we were about to do was COMPLETELY OUT OF CHARACTER for us! And for them, this announcement will seem like it's coming from out of the blue!!! No one knew these conversations were existing. We weren't at the point that we wanted anybody's opinion.

The first people we told were my girlfriends from Bible Study. We met annually for a Friendsgiving, and we decided to go out to dinner. After dinner I announced what our plans were going to be and that we were on a 5 year plan. They all looked at me like I had lost my mind, and a couple of the ladies just started laughing. I honestly think they just thought I was being my flakey, unpredictable self, and truly weren't taking me seriously.

We then told our families. Again, no push-back, but we got a lot of unbelief. I dont' think anyone took us seriously. I don't know that I would have believed any of my friends or family either had they come up with a crazy plan like this!

We set out to save as much money as would could, we stopped eating out as much as we were accustomed to, and I stopped buying new clothes every couple of weeks. We were shocked at how much we could save when we stopped our frivolous spending.

2018, we bought the van. 2019, Ray resigned from his job on April Fools Day and his manager thought he was pulling an April Fools Joke but soon realized he wasn't and was very intrigued and was maybe a bit jealous. Immediately the van build began, In 2020, I quit my job, and on November 3, 2020, we hit the road!
